I'll Give You the Sun, by Jandy Nelson

The New York Times Bestselling story of first love, family, loss, and betrayal for fans of John Green, Jenny Offill, Emma Straub, and Rainbow Rowell

“We were all heading for each other on a collision course, no matter what. Maybe some people are just meant to be in the same story.”

At first, Jude and her twin brother are NoahandJude; inseparable. Noah draws constantly and is falling in love with the charismatic boy next door, while daredevil Jude wears red-red lipstick, cliff-dives, and does all the talking for both of them.

Years later, they are barely speaking. Something has happened to change the twins in different yet equally devastating ways . . . but then Jude meets an intriguing, irresistible boy and a mysterious new mentor.

The early years are Noah’s to tell; the later years are Jude’s. But they each have only half the story, and if they can only find their way back to one another, they’ll have a chance to remake their world.

This radiant, award-winning novel from the acclaimed author of The Sky Is Everywhere will leave you breathless and teary and laughing—often all at once.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—A resplendent novel from the author of The Sky Is Everywhere (Dial, 2010). Fraternal twins and burgeoning artists Jude and Noah are inseparable until puberty hits and they find themselves competing for boys, a spot at an exclusive art school, and their parents' affections. Told in alternating perspectives and time lines, with Noah's chapters taking place when they are 13 and Jude's when they are 16, this novel explores how it's the people closest to us who have the power to both rend us utterly and knit us together. Jude's takes are peppered with entries from her bible of superstitions and conversations with her grandmother's ghost, and Noah continuously imagines portraits (complete with appropriately artsy titles) to cope with his emotions. In the intervening years, a terrible tragedy has torn their family apart, and the chasm between the siblings grows ever wider. Vibrant imagery and lyrical prose propel readers forward as the twins experience first love, loss, betrayal, acceptance, and forgiveness. Art and wonder fill each page, and threads of magical realism lend whimsy to the narrative. Readers will forgive convenient coincidences because of the characters' in-depth development and the swoon-worthy romances. The novel's evocative exploration of sexuality, grief, and sibling relationships will ring true with teens. For fans of Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl (St. Martin's, 2013) and Melina Marchetta's realistic fiction. See author Q&A, p. 152.—Shelley Diaz, School Library Journal

"Bold, even breathtaking. You get the sense [the] characters are bursting through the words, breaking free of normal metaphors and constructions, jubilantly trying to rise up from the prison of language . . . The book celebrates art’s capacity to heal, but it also shows us how we excavate meaning from the art we cherish, and how we find reflections of ourselves within it. . . . I’ll Give You the Sun is a dazzling mirror"—Lauren Oliver for the New York Times Book Review

"Both structurally virtuosic . . . and emotionally wrenching. That alone is a rare combination in literature, YA or otherwise. But then add in the characters . . . This book is a rebuttal to anyone suggesting YA, because it tells stories of young people, is somehow of lesser stuff. I’ll Give You The Sun is literature. Full stop. In my opinion, it’s not just the best YA book of the year, but one of the best books of the year."—Gayle Forman for Parade

"This book is many things at once, all of them engrossing. It's a book where teenagers think in almost indulgently poetic language while still sounding genuinely adolescent. It's two separate but equally intoxicating love stories. . . . Most of all, it's the mystery of what happened to tear Noah and Jude apart, and what—if anything—can bring them back together again."—NPR's Guide to 2014's Great Reads

"This book is about many things: grief, sexuality, creativity, bravery, identity, guilt. But mostly it's about love. Be prepared with more tissues than you needed for The Fault in Our Stars, a chunky notebook to scribble down all the quotes and a handful of witty responses when people ask why you're chuckling to yourself in the corner. Because this book will make you realise how beautiful words can be."—The Guardian

Holy hell. Quite honestly, I'm dumbfounded.

This book has shaken my world. What an effing talent with words! This has got to be one of the most originally written novels I've read in my life. The writing was the most supremely and supernaturally cool weave-of-words that I've ever encountered. It's ridiculous. Jandy Nelson is THE Rock Star of Spot-On writing. And yes, I just stole some words out of this gem of a novel.

Jude and Noah are twins. They do what siblings do, love and hate each other. They each have their story and they also share a story, slowly letting us into their worlds and their secrets with their alternating voices. A story filled with love, betrayal, family, secrets, and most of all... magic.

I'm probably one of the only people on Earth who did not love-to-death The Sky is Everywhere. I really liked it, but that's it. So I was not jumping at the chance to read this. But then it got to the point where my feed was drowning in 5-star reviews of this thing and I was like, what the hell.

What the hell, indeed. Here's what this book is: A magnificently plotted story, characters that will crawl into your heart and squeeze hard, and lyrical singsong prose that will leave you breathless--and salivating for more. The author paints like Noah, sculpts like Guillermo, only she uses the 26 letters of the alphabet. It's astounding.

As if I couldn't be more pleased, I'm pretty sure this will become a classic of Magical Realism. I grew up reading, rereading and rerererereading Isabel Allende's The House of Spirits. It's my all-time of all-times favorite book since I was like, 11. So the magic factor in this story was just like my own personal oasis on the driest of deserts.

Word of advice? Read this NOW.

Just Wasn't For Me...
By Tanya Atkinson
Here is another example of me feeling like I read a different book than everyone else. I'll Give You the Sun has been incredibly hyped in the YA book community (and beyond) for several months. When I first read the synopsis last fall I decided it didn't particularly interest me. But the hype grew and grew and, even though I didn't feel excited about it, I decided to read it. So basically I caved to BRPP - book-related peer pressure. (Note to self: Let this be the last time. When I'm feeling ambivalent about a book and decide to read it anyway based on hype I am rarely blown away. I know what I like and don't like and if my initial feeling is 'this one isn't really for me' then it probably isn't.)

I enjoyed the alternating POV's between twins Noah and Jude, especially the alternating timeframes - Noah's chapters from when the twins were 13-14 and Jude's chapters at the age of 16. The chapters from Noah's POV focused on a time that was full of change for Noah, Jude and their family. Events that made a huge impact on their lives and who they would become. And, despite this, I often felt the narrative was slow-moving. I found myself thinking "will something please just happen already?"

Noah and Jude's relationship was a complex one - filled with competition, jealousy, guilt, sacrifice, connection and love. I did find that I preferred Noah's chapters/POV over Jude's. Somehow I found him more relatable and at times it was almost as if I were experiencing all his feelings of love, confusion, disappointment, euphoria. His exploration of a new relationship and all the intense feelings that go with that were portrayed so well.

Unfortunately much of the conflict with the novel was based on one of my biggest pet peeves in fiction: a severe lack of communication. I simply cannot stand it when major issues could be solved by a single conversation. All it would take would be a sharing of information and *poof* problem solved. So that definitely tainted my feelings for the story.

The writing style seems to be something that most reviewers gush over. For me, not so much. At times it worked and others times it didn't. A little goes a long way with purple prose and I found it to be overdone and at times distracting. So, the very thing that made others adore this book so much is one of the things that, for me, detracted from it. I did enjoy the various connections throughout the story and the feeling that so many events and relationships were meant to be.

In no way was I'll Give You the Sun a bad book. Nor did I dislike it. I simply did not get from it what so many others seemed to. And I do not feel passionately about it like so many do.

A Radiant, Powerful Novel
By Jon (Scott Reads It!)
'll Give You The Sun is an unforgettable, heartbreaking novel that will hit readers with so many emotions and will leave them breathless. Jandy Nelson's writing style is extremely unique and it took me a bit of time to get used to it, but I was extremely impressed with how distinct she made each point of view. Readers will laugh, smile and cry along with Noah and Jude, these are characters that I fell in love with and I just know that countless other readers will too. Few books have emotionally affected me like Nelson's latest and there's something so stunning about this novel.

I'll Give You The Sun is told in two point of views and covers two major points in Jude and Noah's lives. Noah tells the story of when he was 13/14 and Jude tells the story of when she was 16/17; in doing so, both twins give one half of the story and together they give a complete picture of their lives. Everything comes together in such a cohesive, realistic way in I'll Give You The Sun and it was impressive how Nelson connected these two storylines seamlessly. The beauty in this novel is truly in the details and how everything seems to come full circle by the time the final pages roll around.

Jandy Nelson's writing has an almost dreamlike quality to it and this novel is very heavy on metaphors and hyperboles. Each page is coated with metaphors, something that bothered me initially, but I quickly grew to love the way Nelson writes. Each voice is finely and realistically crafted, giving this novel a sense of authenticity and beauty. I definitely prefered Noah's story with his artistic musings and ability to turn any scenario into a work of art. I did really enjoy June's point of view with her superstitions and quirks, but it just didn't live up to Noah's POV.

The romance in this book made my heart beat incredibly fast and I fell for the two couples incredibly fast. I love how Nelson explored Noah's sexuality and his path from questioning if he's gay to his lusting after Brian. The 'questioning' section of this novel was intriguing and not enough LGBT novels address the uncertainty that comes with discovering that you're gay. The romance between Jude and Oscar was incredibly sweet and it definitely made my heart race with excitement. I was initially perturbed by the age difference between these two, but I became so drawn into their relationship that age became a frivolous concern. I loved the way these relationships progressed, the characters fall in love slowly, but surely in a realistic manner.

The only thing better than the romance in this novel was the relationship between Jude and Noah. I have never seen such a true portrayal of the relationship between siblings and this novel chronicles the highs and lows that dominate their lives. As much as I rooted for the couples in this novel, I was secretly harboring a hope that the siblings would reconcile and be the best friends they once were. It was so touching watching the younger versions of Jude and Noah interact, yet knowing that the siblings would become estranged broke my heart. YA novels usually skip over familial relationships, but the magic of this novel lies in the bond between Jude and Noah.

I'll Give You The Sun shows how beautiful and messy love can truly be and what it truly means to live. Nelson explores the love between the two siblings perfectly and readers will root for them to fall in love with their respective partners and mend their relationship. I didn't expect this novel to be such a whirlwind and powerful novel, but Nelson really surprised me with her unique writing and ability to craft such genuine relationships. I haven't read a novel ever like I'll Give You The Sun and books like this one are rare gems that ought to be treasured.

High Frequency Communication and Sensing: Traveling-Wave Techniques (Devices, Circuits, and Systems), by Ahmet Tekin, Ahmed Emira

High Frequency Communication and Sensing: Traveling-Wave Techniques introduces novel traveling wave circuit techniques to boost the performance of high-speed circuits in standard low-cost production technologies, like complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS). A valuable resource for experienced analog/radio frequency (RF) circuit designers as well as undergraduate-level microelectronics researchers, this book:

  • Explains the basics of high-speed signaling, such as transmission lines, distributed signaling, impedance matching, and other common practical RF background material
  • Promotes a dual-loop coupled traveling wave oscillator topology, the trigger mode distributed wave oscillator, as a high-frequency multiphase signal source
  • Introduces a force-based starter mechanism for dual-loop, even-symmetry, multiphase traveling wave oscillators, presenting a single-loop version as a force mode distributed wave antenna (FMDWA)
  • Describes higher-frequency, passive inductive, and quarter-wave-length-based pumped distributed wave oscillators (PDWOs)
  • Examines phased-array transceiver architectures and front-end circuits in detail, along with distributed oscillator topologies
  • Devotes a chapter to THz sensing, illustrating a unique method of traveling wave frequency multiplication and power combining
  • Discusses various data converter topologies, such as digital-to-analog converters (DACs), analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), and GHz-bandwidth sigma-delta modulators
  • Covers critical circuits including phase rotators and interpolators, phase shifters, phase-locked loops (PLLs), delay-locked loops (DLLs), and more

It is a significantly challenging task to generate and distribute high-speed clocks. Multiphase low-speed clocks with sharp transition are proposed to be a better option to accommodate the desired timing resolution. High Frequency Communication and Sensing: Traveling-Wave Techniques provides new horizons in the quest for greater speed and performance.

He reveals the secrets of walk-ins, gangplank approaches, false flag operations, dead letter boxes and brush contacts. There are sections on how to construct an alternative identity, how to check your house for bugging devices and your car for bombs, how to disappear in a crowd by "going grey," and how agents are spotted and recruited. But Spy also goes beyond the techniques of espionage to examine a range of issues facing today’s intelligence services—the morality of using assassination and blackmail, the heroes and villains of the espionage world, and how modern terrorists are able to evade detection by Western intelligence organizations. At the end of it all he even tells you how to apply for a job with the real intelligence services.

Well done.
By James Casteel
I ordered this book after catching the BBC series one late night on PBS. I was intrigued as the tradecraft was spot on and it almost was like watching any of the three letter boys' training debriefs. I sent away for the book and was not disappointed. If only the BBC would release a DVD of the series.

British Military Intelligence in the Palestine Campaign, 1914-1918, by Yigal Sheffy

Shortly after the end of the First World War, General Sir George Macdonagh, wartime director of British Military Intelligence, revealed that Lord Allenby's victory in Palestine had never been in doubt because of the success of his intelligence service. Seventy-five years later this book explains Macdonagh's statement. Sheffy also adopts a novel approach to traditional heroes of the campaign such as T E Lawrence.

How British Intelligence evolved into a war-winning tool
By R. A Forczyk
This is a well-documented history of British intelligence in the First World War, that grew out of a PhD dissertation written by a former Israeli military intelligence officer. When the war began, British forces in Egypt had little reliable information on Turkish forces or intentions. At first, the British underestimated the ability of the Turks to attack the Suez Canal, but after a minor raid they grossly overestimated their capability. Throughout the war, British intelligence in the Mideast was hindered by both cultural bias against the Turks combined with an Anglo-Centric view that the Palestine front was a major front for the Ottoman Empire (which actually regarded the Caucusus and the Russians as the main theater of war). Several noted figures appear in the text, such as T E Lawrence (AKA "Lawrence of Arabia"), and their true roles and participation in the war are depicted without the usual colorful embellishments. Sheffy concludes that overall human intelligence (HUMINT) made little contribution to the British victory because the information provided was generally too little, too late. The one effective spy ring, the "Nili Organization" of Jews in occupied Palestine, was quickly broken up by the Turks in 1917. The only worthwhile human information came from prisoners and defectors. Sheffy claims convincingly that the most significant intelligence development brought by the war was the shift from dependence on human sources to reliance on technical means. Indeed, the British made very effective use of early imagery intelligence from aircraft and radio intercepts. By the end of the war the British had honed intelligence to the point that it could greatly contribute to the final operational campaign. Sheffy's book is well-written, if a bit dry at times, and benefits from the insights of an intelligence professional. This is a good addition to any well-rounded First World War library collection.

British Military Intelligence in the Palestine Campaign
By Daniel Pipes, Middle East Forum, Philadelphia
In 1921, just three years after the end of World War I, Great Britain's director of Military Intelligence made the astounding statement that General Allenby had won in Palestine because he "knew from his intelligence every disposition and movement of the enemy. Every one of his opponents' cards was known to him, and he was consequently able to play his own hand with the most perfect assurance. In those circumstances victory was certain." Sheffy's precise and far-ranging research pieces together in masterly fashion just how Allenby benefited from such extraordinary information about his foes. In the process, he shows not only how a key military campaign was fought and won, but also how the modern intelligence service took shape in a spontaneous and amorphous fashion. Along the way, Sheffy demonstrates the near-uselessness of human intelligence (spies, travelers, prisoners of war, et al.), dismissing the whole lot with a quote from the time: "What can agents find out about the intentions of Governments that have no notion what their own intentions are?" In contrast, technical means (air reconnaissance, radio interceptions) proved highly valuable. He establishes how the latter gave the British a much better idea of tactics than of grand strategy, and how they paid heavily for their wrong guesses about the latter. Despite their fair share of mistakes, the British intelligence operatives made a very credible start at bringing a "hitherto hidden dimension . . . into the forefront of modern warfare."

About the Author
In 1889, Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr co-founded Hull House in Chicago, Illinois, the first settlement house in the United States. The house was named after Charles Hull, who built the building in 1856. When starting out, all of the funding for the Hull House came from the $50,000 estate she inherited after her father died. Later, the Hull House was sponsored by Helen Culver, the wealthy real estate agent who had initially leased the house to the women. Jane and Ellen were the first two occupants of the house, which would later be the residence of about 25 women. At its height, Hull House was visited each week by around 2000 people. Its facilities included a night school for adults, kindergarten classes, clubs for older children, a public kitchen, an art gallery, a coffeehouse, a gymnasium, a girls club, bathhouse, a book bindery, a music school, a drama group, a library, and labor-related divisions. Her adult night school was a forerunner of the continuing education classes offered by many universities today. In addition to making available services and cultural opportunities for the largely immigrant population of the neighborhood, Hull House afforded an opportunity for young social workers to acquire training. Eventually, the Hull House became a 13-building settlement, which included a playground and a summer camp

An Empathetic Look At the Plight of Early 20th Century Poverty-Stricken Immigrants
By Mark B. Cohen
Hull House founder and Nobel Peace Prize winner Jane Addams spent twenty years working with the poverty-stricken immigrant poor in Chicago. She writes here with understated passion and unqualified empathy for their plight.

Anyone who wants to know why we have a fourty hour work should read this book. Addams writes about the desirablity of factory work over household work for young women, due both to the lack of isolation and the relatively short working hours, "only" from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., six days a week.

Anyone who wants to know why we minimum wage laws, social security disability laws, age discrimination laws, social security laws, welfare laws, etc. should read this book. Addams writes about people earning pennies an hour, having their peak earning years in their twenties, being disabled in their thirties, and being dependent on children for financial support. The children, in turn had their education stop before high school so they can support their families.

Anyone who wants to know why governments spend so much money on education should read this book. Addams writes about children having a choose limited to factory employment or household service, with the more intellectually oriented being doomed to spend a lifetime haunting public libraries and public lectures, but having virtually no chance of escaping the circumstance of their birth.

Anyone who wants to know why poverty-stricken people are suspicious of political reform movements should read this book. Addams writes about the major efforts Chicago's political powerhouses made to help individual poverty-stricken people, and the irrelevance of wisdom advocating personal savings to people who could not pay for food for their family, or of wisdom urging them to stay out of taverns when they were a great source of personal help and friendship.

One hundred and five years after Addams wrote this book, the United States is a far better place to live than it was then. But our country's improvements, urged by great progressive leaders like Addams, are under relentless right-wing assaults today. This book is extremely relevant to our country's future, if our future is going to continue to better than our past.

The introduction of Charlene Haddock Seigfried, the past president of the Society for the Advancement of American philosophy, adds a great deal to this work, as it places Addams and her fellow reformers into the context of both their times and the prevailing systems of thought.

Addams saw democracy as a way of life, and not just a series of electoral choices. She sought a major expansion of municipal services, to both improve the living standards of the desperately poor and to wean them away from dependence on corrupt political machines. She advocated the existence of "A reformer who really knew the people and their great human needs, who believed it was the business of government to serve them, and who further recognized the educative power of a sense of responsibility...."

Addams addresses this book to the philanthropic community which provided the base of her financial support. She clearly saw them as providing seed money for demonstration projects to create greater governmental and societal commitment.

It is fashionable in some quarters to say that nothing has been done and nothing can be done to improve the plight of the poverty-stricken. Anyone who believes that, or must deal with others who believe that, should read and quote liberally from this book.

Addams Visualizes Day-to-Day Democracy
By Mork
Jane Addams was an amazing woman - respectful and highly intelligent. Like fellow Pragmatists John Dewey, William James and George Herbert Mead, she maintained that democracy emerges from the People rather than being bestowed on Americans from government (whether benevolent or otherwise). As the founder of Chicago's Hull House, one of the most famous settlements in the US, she met people everyday that had diverse experiences and hopes for their lives. She tells their stories straightforwardly and in a way that allows the reader to clearly see how misinterpretation occurs with and between people. Addams advocates for doing good "with" people as opposed to doing good "for" people, for taking ethical action to ensure that all Americans have a voice in our ongoing democratic conversation.

Good Ideas and Principles for the 21st Century, Too!
By bln
If you think of Jane Addams in terms of settlement houses and ending World War I (or trying to), settle down with this slender book to read her thoughts on "social ethics" and practical considerations that affect us today even in different situations than Addams was confronting. Excellent information and thought-provoking. Highly recommended for students of peace and justice studies and members of Women's International League for Peace and Freedom - Addams' ideas about social and economic status differences are eye-opening!
