Loved Weston and this was a great take on Jock meets Geek
By DonnaC
Walk of Shame by Andrea Smith
4 stars!!

“Own it. Say it out loud, say it proud, but stop playing games if you ever expect to be taken seriously.”

So…it is Weston’s turn…would this be a case of like father like son? I loved our Cocky Brit Easton, while he was reserved and aloof in his own way he had a great heart so I had great expectations for Weston. I have to say East and West…total opposites, however Weston was a perfect blend of both his parents, he had the best bits from both of them.

Weston on the outside seemed like the atypical rich jock. He was cocky, arrogant, loved himself, was a bit of a player and he was a star of the college hockey team. He was quick witted in a conceited way at times but this was a front, he played to the people he surrounded himself with but when he was alone or in this case in the company of a geeky tutor we got to meet the real Weston and he was a treat to read about.

Weston had failed his American Lit class the previous semester and needed to pass it. He was intelligent but this one subject matter just didn’t hold his interest until he was paired with a private tutor called Penny Lane.

Penny was a geek, but she had attitude when she needed it. She gave as good as she got and she had a lot of ammunition. She had been burned in the past and her misconceptions have led her to believe men are the enemy and she was doing a thesis to prove it. Would Weston be her latest experiment? Would he prove her statistics correct or would he be one of the men that broke the mould?

These two, after butting heads a few times do actually form a friendship surprisingly and Weston certain leaves Penny confused for a majority of the time. She soon sees through Weston’s faade and actually loves the man that she sees underneath. This is certainly going to be a lesson for both of them.

“And I watch as he stands up, gives me one last look, and then walks out of the room and, ultimately, out of my life.”

I have to admit that Penny was hard to like in the beginning…you will understand once you read but I cannot give too much away. However, I loved the way that Andrea Smith basically unwrapped her like a pass the parcel and as each layer was removed you ended up loving the Penny that was revealed underneath. As each layer was removed, you related, you understood and fairly soon you are chomping at the bit as her biggest supporter.

Weston was adorable, his wit had me in stitches at times and the banter was an extremely welcome addition to some fantastic dialogue. It is this relationship between the two of them that kept those pages frantically turning anxiously wondering how this was all going to pan out.

“Hey, Peyton…want to hear a joke about my dick? Aww, never mind. It’s too long.”
“Oh really. Well, do you want to hear a joke about my pussy? Never mind, Weston, you won’t get it.”

This was a hottie god meets geek with a difference and I welcomed the twist on the story that Andrea Smith delivered. I loved the relationship between both sets of roommates and I could actually see myself firmly amongst these bunch of friends.

I absolutely adored Carson, Weston’s sister and I am itching for her story. I am hoping that Andrea Smith can see it in her future to pen her story because I am sure that it will extremely interesting but most of all emotional. Some of us wear our scars and insecurities on the outside, but hers are firmly hidden.

I loved this book, not only was it a great college read but it was also a voyage of discovery for both Weston and Penny. Sometimes people cross your path for a reason and it is up to the individuals involved to realise and grab that opportunity with both hands. This book also went to show how peoples prejudices and misconceptions can cause you to pigeonhole people that certainly do not fit. Take time to get the know the person, make the effort and you may be surprised by what you find underneath. Fab book, loved it!

“I have just recently had first-hand experience with such manipulation and duplicity for the sole purpose of someone’s need to prove her moral and intellectual superiority over a male she evidently regarded as shallow, dispassionate, and undeserving of basic respect.”

No Shame....
By bookcrazy_heather
No shame in this book! I loved the dual role of Peyton and Penny and I believe it played a part in what she was trying to get across. I totally get why she wanted to prove her point. I work in a so called "mans" industry where some of the times women are not viewed equally simply because they are women. I loved these characters weren't 1-dimensional and had many layers of who they were and where they came from especially Weston. He was his own with the heart of his mom and the ruggedness of his father! Looking forward to reading more of this series!

An overall good story
By Hannah Webb
I enjoyed Weston and Peyton's story, but not as much as the original G-Men series. It was a unique storyline, but I struggled to connect with the heroine in the beginning. I also felt that the story was rushed in places, especially when it came to the two main characters getting together after everything is revealed. The writing was good and the storyline kept me engrossed in what was happening. There were some minor details that confused me (why he's reading English authors in an Early American Lit class), but overall a good story.

Review
"User Interface Design and Evaluation is comprehensive and clear. It's an amazing achievement - a textbook in plain English that works both for the classroom and for practitioners learning on their own. It covers the entire user-centered design process with details on the steps and techniques for requirements gathering, design, and evaluation. It includes great stories and case studies as well as engaging exercises. This is a superb book that puts all the pieces together."
- Ginny Redish, Redish & Associates, Inc.

"What makes this book unique is its blend of traditional HCI concepts and contemporary guidelines as well as its inclusion of practical pointers for acceptance of user-centered design. Unlike other HCI books, this text is generally succinct and to the point. Yet beyond being an excellent reference, it also includes very good practical examples, e.g., design of GUI, Web, and embedded systems are especially useful. The book's coverage of traditional HCI notions (e.g., visibility, affordance, feedback, metaphors, mental models, and the like), combined with practical guidelines to contemporary designs (e.g., GUIs, Web) ranks this work among the best in the field, particularly well suited as a textbook for students in a HCI class. "
- Andrew Duchowski, Clemson University

"The entire UI design process is presented in this text with an effective blend of theory and practice. The authors do a fine job of presenting "classic" HCI foundations and current trends in UI design. The authors have a keen knack for using interesting and practical demonstrations, examples, and exercises to reinforce key concepts. The strength of this text is the step-by-step "how-to-do-usability" guidance provided throughout the text. This book will motivate the reader to want to immediately "jump on the UI design bandwagon" and to get started on the business of attending to users in UI design. "
- Laurie P. Dringus, Nova Southeastern University

"This text provides a solid introduction to current thought and practices in User Interface Design and Evaluation. The authors provide a logical structure for the highly iterative work of UI Design, and the book is organized to support classroom presentation and discussion. This text can be a valuable resource for students of UI Design and Evaluation, as well as for technical and management professionals interested in an introduction to the field. "
- Karl Steiner, Ph.D. Usability Manager, UGS

"While reading the review copy of this book, I actually felt guilty about having taught so many HCI courses with the existing well-known textbooks. This book offers much more of the sort of material that students yearn for but find too little of in existing textbooks: extensive, concrete, and realistic advice and examples about how to proceed while designing and evaluating user interfaces. With a steady stream of brief examples and some longer case studies; with "how-to-do-it" advice and worked-out solutions to problems, the student is constantly confronted with -- and guided through -- the multifaceted real world of user interface design. The book also contains the material that we are accustomed to finding in HCI textbooks: presentation of well-known HCI concepts, principles, results, and methods. This material is woven together with the more concrete, practical information in a creative way that enhances the appreciation of both types of content."
- Anthony Jameson, Professor, International University in Germany and Principal Researcher at DFKI,the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence

"The book features many elements that make the process of user interface development real. Plenty of examples show when and where user interface development has failed and how those failures might have been mitigated. Additionally, the plethora of exercises challenges you to think about the principles and theories explained, along with the practice.
Graphically, the book features terrific examples of low-fidelity process documents through finished products. There are full-color illustrations along with instruction on how to use color well, and plenty of tables, boxes, and figures that further enhance the text.
There is an incredible amount of information in this book. If you are involved in developing user interfaces, it is the best start for your journey."
- Elisa Kaplan Miller, Technical Communications, November 2005

An Thorough Overview of the Entire Field of Usability
By Kindle Customer
There are a number of helpful, introductory books available about web usability. Namely, "Don't Make Me Think," by Steve Krug, and "Designing the Obvious," by Robert Hoekman, are two I would highly recommend. Both offer general principals to keep in mind while designing web sites.

Neither, however, offers as thorough an overview of the entire field of usability as does "User Interface Design and Evaluation." I found that after having been convinced of the importance of usability by Krug and Hoekman, this book provided the depth and breadth of coverage necessary to gain a thorough understanding of usability.

Usability isn't just about making sure that links are clearly identified and navigation schemes are consistent. More fundamentally, it is necessary to identify the critical user tasks that your application must support. The discussion of Task Analysis in chapter 4 is particularly helpful in this regard. The concept of a 'cognitive walkthrough' is introduced as an effective method of task analysis. I have since utilized this concept regularly as a very effective way to gain a better understanding of tasks from the user's perspective.

Other concepts such as personas, conceptual design, and usability evaluation are covered equally as thoroughly. This book has the sensibility, thoroughness, and design of a text book. If you are looking to move beyond a cursory understanding of usability, and acquire an understanding of the entire field, I would recommend you buy this book.

Were I teaching a course in interface design, this would be the text
By Auntebook
I can't tell you how many people I've told to read this book. It's one of the first references I go to on my shelf and I've read it through more than once. Were I to teach a course in interface design (and I have considered it) I would use "User Interface Design and Evaluation" as the text, as it covers the topics from understanding users through testing the usability of the design -- from soup to nuts. The book is full of concrete examples and exercises. I've suggested this book to a number of people new to user experience, as a great place to get started.

Dated at best.
By A. Nortrup
This text is dated at best. It has some good information on the design process, but has no practical advice on how to design for some of the recent developments in UI, like touch screens or iPhones (which this text pre-dates). Buy it used if you have to have it for class.

Review
"These stories are as American as the stars and stripes, even though they have some of their origins in Africa." Saturday Review

About the Author
After the first book appeared in 1880, Joel Chandler Harris was deluged with letters from readers all over the country asking for more stories of Brer Rabbit and his friends--so for the remaining years of his life he collected and wrote them. Richard Chase, noted folklorist and author of Jack Tales and Grandfather Tales, compiled and edited the volume after Harris’s death, and his occasional footnotes and word definitions contribute to our understanding of the dialect. Chase’s belief in the importance of folktales and Harris’s work is summed up in his foreword: "These tales grew up in the soil of our nation. They came from the soul of a people. They endure."

Richard Chase collected The Jack Tales in the mountain country of North Carolina, where they have been handed down for generations. Everyone knows the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. This book contains eighteen stories about Jack, many of them still completely new to the average reader. And what adventures Jack has! Noted American folklorist Richard Chase (1904–1988) has been called the man “most responsible for the renaissance of Appalachian storytelling.” A collector of tales that had been handed down from generation to generation in the Appalachian regions of the United States, Chase was born in Alabama and lived in the mountains of North Carolina.

Love This Book
By A Customer
Joel Chandler Harris is all anyone needs to know to get a great introduction to and immersion in the folk tales and dialects of the southeastern US. The tales are charming, amusing, instructive. The presentation lives up to the standard set by the tales. Harris had an excellent ear for the rhythms and sounds, and although the text may be difficult to read at times, the effort is well rewarded. The book also contains a glossary of terms that may not be familiar to today's reader. If there is still difficulty, reading the text aloud will alleviate most of them.

This is Towelie's acclaimed account of his birth as genetically engineered Smart Person RG-400, his subsequent escape from the Tynacorp laboratory, and his road to recovery from his many addictions, as a human.

It's heartbreaking passages like this one, that show the depth and suffering the author has gone through: "I am a person who often gets hung out to dry by all those around me."

Electrifying
By Frank P
A Million Little Fibers is an ideological mess, a paranoid right-wing fantasy masquerading as an Orwellian warning. It pretends to oppose the police state and forced mind control, but all it really does is celebrate the nastiness of its hero, Towelie. Fascinating and Disturbing.

Law School Expert says: MUST READ!
By AKL
You want to know what lawyers really do, how hard they really work, and what their lives are really like? READ THIS BOOK.
I happened across it while doing research for my next book (addressing the question of whether people should go to law school) and I am going to put it on my blog and suggest that all of my law school admission consulting clients read this. It's a great deal on Kindle (only $9.95) and offers detailed insights into various legal careers. It's not just a list of what lawyers do each day as I feared when I purchased it - it's an in depth conversation with attorneys about what they do and how they feel about what they do. Lawyers surveyed graduated from all levels of US law schools (NYU, Thomas Jefferson, etc.) and even some from overseas. Absolutely read this!

As someone who's considering going to law school, I found this book very interesting and helpful. It's comforting to know that the options after law school can be so varied, and I really liked the fact that the author gave snapshots of these individuals' typical work days. I highly recommend this book to anyone who's considering going to law school or who's in law school and trying to figure out what career path they should take.

Grade 2–6—In this follow-up to How to Draw Cartoon Animals (Watson-Guptill, 1995), Hart shows young artists how to draw an impressive array of creatures. He includes many different animals, such as bears, penguins, horses, dogs, and cats, as well as a variety of breeds. In the introduction, Hart explains that this book includes edgier styles and more retro characters than his first book. The step-by-step, black-and-white outlines are accessible to beginning artists as well as those with more experience. The humorous and engaging characters include different cartoon "types" such as the evil genius or ultra-cute kitten, and there is a wide range of facial expressions as well. The simple text that accompanies each drawing explains the artist's choices and focuses readers' attention on important details in each drawing. Children will love this thorough and easy-to-use how-to guide.—Mari Pongkhamsing, St. Perpetua School, Lafayette, CA

Well, for a penguin, it doesn't take much to bundle up for a snowstorm. But even a mother penguin is known to nudge her child to wear a hat!
While you can create a variety of penguin characters, there is one caveat: Penguins have to be cute! Even if you're drawing evil penguins, they have to be cute-evil. It's a rule. If you break it, you'll get hate mail from penguin lovers all over the world.
Here's an important hint that is sure to make them look cute: Penguins have almost no legs!Their bodies are basically plopped down on their large flat feet. They're all tummy! This gives them a stubby, adorable look, even though they've got a long torso, because the torso is always abruptly cut off at the feet.

Big Book of Drawing Animals
By kris
I really like this book. Lately I've been drawing cartoon animals, so it's nice to have examples of some of the most popular animals that are drawn. It gives you a variety of different styles for drawing animals, & a lot of tips, suggestions, and what to avoid, when creating your own. My only qualm with this book, is that there are more similar examples of animals, than lots of different animals. For example: the first few animals (bears, cats, dogs, horses) have a lot of examples/pages, but when the book starts getting towards the end, animals like (cow, pig, rabbit) have maybe 2 examples, while the hippo, turtle & giraffe only got one, before the index page. It would've been nice for more animal types (i.e. alligators & crocodiles differences), & a few examples each for balance. All in all, it's a great book to have in your arsenal when tackling animal drawing, regardless.

Fun book of cute cartoon animals!
By Casey Jenkins
I'm new to drawing and just happened to see this book on Amazon and thought I'd give it a try. Although my attempts don't quite match the author's, I'm actually drawing some pretty cute animals by following the instructions in the book. I've recently just added a couple of more books to my cart from Christopher Hart, anxious to try other types of drawing. I would definitely give this a try if you're a beginner and want to make some really cute pictures in a very short time!

Architectural Representation and the Perspective Hinge (MIT Press), by Alberto Perez-Gomez, Louise Pelletier

Writing from inside the discipline of architecture, rather than from the more common extrapolations from the history of painting and philosophy, Alberto Prez-Gmez and Louise Pelletier focus on the implications of the tool of perspective (and the hegemony of vision) for architectural representation. Their primary thesis is that tools of representation have a direct influence on the conceptual development of projects and generation of forms, and that there are alternatives to the reductive working methods of most contemporary practice.

The book examines textual evidence across a broad historical period, concentrating on the relationship between drawing and architectural space in the period from the seventh century to the twentieth century. The book discusses such issues as optical correction and the nature of architectural drawing in selected treatises, revealing the complexity and potential contradiction inherent in any linear history of representation. The authors' ultimate aim is to probe the possibilities of the constructed world--that is, architecture--as a poetic translation, rather than prosaic transcription, of its representations.

Review

This is a book of extraordinary historical breadth that astutely explores cultural continuity and transformation within architectural representation.

(Parachute)

Alberto Prez-Gmez and Louise Pelletier's book, Architectural Representation and the Perspective Hinge, can be thought of and seen as oceanic in its fluidity, and its solid depth. The authors' thinking leads us into the dark opacity of light and through the opal luminosity of the mind's eye, producing an architectural joy! The book is built by the block of time…in time. The work extends the vanishing point to the otherside, that is, to the mystery of pure creation.

(John Hejduk, Architect)

Alberto Prez-Gmez's and Louise Pelletier's searching explorations of different practices of architectural representation and their implications let us understand both need and possibilities for an architecture that would once again restore a depth to buildings unknown to cyberspace and help human beings to return to themselves. No one who cares about the genesis of the world we live in will want to miss this always thought-provoking, immensely learned historical study; no one who cares about the future of architecture can afford to do so.

(Karsten Harries, Department of Philosophy, Yale University)

Architectural Representation and the Perspective Hinge impressively surveys the development of architectural representation from Renaissance perspective to the virtual reality of today's computerized architectural practice. The book reveals that architectural representation is not a mere neutral application of a technique; it is deeply fused with our understanding of the world as well as architecture and its essence and a man-made cosmos.

(Juhani Pallasmaa, Architect, Professor of Architecture, Helsinki)

This impressive and scholarly work adds a thirteenth month to the extant twelve of phenomena in architectural representation.

(Steven Holl, Architect)

Taking on the Kingdom
By Keith Burton
The Kingdom of God in Africa is engaging and competently written, and appears to have taken into account both specialist and novice. Throughout the work, Shaw presents remarkably clear summaries of people, places, and events. He also does well in working with Niebuhr's kingdom model which was consistently applied throughout. Unfortunately, the very kingdom model that provided the framework for this invigorating study has contributed to its flaws.

First is the assumption that one can speak of an "African Christianity." This term suggests that Shaw intends to write about the Christianity "of" Africa, when in reality the multifarious nature of African church history means that one can only write about Christianity "in" Africa. The very fact that North African expressions of Christianity evolved in a very different historical and socio-political climate than Christianity in the South or West mandates different assumptions.

Secondly, although Shaw's application of the kingdom model is utilized to avoid the pitfalls of European imperialist or African nationalist subjectivity, his sympathy for the first is subtly manifest. While he does not approach the subject matter with the blatant racism of earlier historians, he does make assumptions that are somewhat exclusive. He compares African syncretism with Christian orthodoxy, but does not critique the concept of who determines "orthodoxy." Isn't it true to say that the Catholic cult of the saints, and even the Christian embrace of Sunday is syncretistic? Further, how can he speak of the European missionary activities in East Africa as a "reintroduction" of Christianity when the Ethiopian Church was very much alive and well? Additionally, in his critique of the "independent" church movements, Shaw contends that for many of the movements, "Jesus Christ... was often obscured by independency." (256) The problem comes with the concept of "independence". Independent from what? A European system that had already obscured Christ with its iconographic imperialism andcolonial intolerance?

Thirdly, Shaw's interpretive approach has resulted in an over-reliance on secondary sources. Apart from Augustine's City of God, he does not appear to have consulted primary material. A work such as this should at least have included primary information from the Kebra-Nagast and the Quran.

Finally, Shaw has neglected a very important component of Christianity in Africa: the Sabbath. My own research has uncovered that the sanctity of the seventh day in Ethiopian Christianity was not the result of medieval legalism, but a central recognition from the church's inception. In fact, Seventh-day sacredness is a part of the Egyptian Coptic Church's constitution. Shaw also failed to mention that a significant number of the independent churches have rejected Sunday in favor of Sabbath.

In sum, Shaw's contribution to the growing body of literature on African Christianity is definitely welcome. The rich legacy of African church history has been omitted from the picture for too long. My only wish is that as historians of Africa attempt to temper their subjective biases, more attention will be given to the primary literature and oral testimonies of the "Kingdoms of God in Africa."

Excellent overview of history of Christianity in Africa
By Philip H. Troutman
Shaw has done an excellent job in this work of telling the story of African Christianity. His use of the idea of the threefold ways the Church has understood the Kingdom of God as the organizing principle for his telling of the story of the African Church put things in a new light for me. As an North American evangelical scholar and field missionary, I will have to think long and hard about my own views of the Kingdom and how it has come/will come here on earth, whether in Africa where I live and work, or in America where I grew up and studied.

Deserving special mention in Shaw's work is the wealth of information on the Church in North Africa before the advent of Islam, and his careful attention to the varying fortunes of the Egyptian and Ethiopian churches across the centuries. Shaw does a good job of balancing his coverage between Catholic and Protestant missions. His treatment of the issue of the relationship between Christian Missions and Colonialism is both hard-hitting and fair. Best of all, his chapters on African Independent/Indigenous Christianity in the Colonial and post-Colonial years (1880s to 1990s) offer a great primer on the rise of the phenomenon for those who have never heard about the "AICs", while also giving some details that were interesting and new even to those of us who have been studying African Christianity for some time.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in African Christianity in particular, and as supplemental reading for anyone studying the History of Christianity in general. My only complaint is that the Kindle edition has many pages where half a word is missing. I think these always fall where one page of the paper book ends and the next page begins. Once or twice this defect made it hard to follow the text. This is why I gave the Kindle edition only 4 stars instead of 4.
