Great Suspense story from a writer that will be missed
By Cindy O
This is the last book we will ever get from Beverly may she RIP. I dont know if it was knowing that or what but this was a great book. This is the sequel to Don't Cry.

Homicide detective Julia Cass (J.D. sister) decides to move to Chattanooga to start a new life with the Homicide Division and be closer to her brother after losing her partner in the line of duty. JD has asked his partner FBI agent Will Brannock to pick her up at the airport. After seeing him send off his one night stand she doesnt hold a high impression of him. On the way from the airport JD gets a call about a murder. Once there both he and Julia are assigned together on the case that turns out to be a serial killer.

I thought the writing was flawless. She flowed from humorous to sensual to suspenseful seamlessly.

Will and Julia had such chemistry with each other right from the start even when she thought he was just a womanizer.

This book also finishes two story arc's that started in Don't Cry. Special Agent J.D. Cass and grief counselor Audrey Sherrod along with his daughter Zoe and Tam and Marcus.

Awesome thriller!
By EBookObsessed
When Homicide Detective Julia Cass transferred to the Chattanooga Police Department to be near her big brother, FBI agent J.D. Cass, she didn't realize that she would be grabbing her first case on the way home from the airport and that she would be teamed up with her brother's partner, Will Brannock. The guy looked more like a GQ model than an FBI agent, but once they get to the scene of the grizzly homicide, Will is all business.

The killer is definitely trying to send a message cutting out the tongues of his victims. He is exacting vengeance with these murders and Julia and Will need to figure out what the victims have in common if they will have any chance in catching the killer.

Another incredible murder mystery which will keep you on your toes. I don't want to go into too much since the best part of murder mystery is to solve the crime along with the characters, so I don't want to give anything away.

This is a well written, engrossing story with just a touch of attraction/romance between the main characters to keep things interesting. I usually have a problem when there are too many POVs in the story telling it usually drags the action down, but in this case it was mostly our two main characters and the killer, with only brief changes over to some of the other characters. Nothing that killed the momentum of the story.

I will say I only have it a 4 stars since Beverly Barton's writing is very descriptive, which although it is usually good story writing, but for a thriller I felt taking too much time for example, to describe the decorating of the room where the murder took place, wasn't really necessary and took your attention away from the important things, like the dead person in the room and the fact gathering. That added to the fact that it was 392 pages. Again, not that the story was not enjoyable and engrossing, but for a thriller, a description of "the furnishing screamed money" would have sufficed rather than the detailing of the damask used on the bedspread.

Don't Say A Word
By Bobbi
I was a great fan of Beverly Barton and mourn the loss the reading public has lost. In my opinion the writing of this, her last book, was very much Beverly Barton style; and I thank her family and fellow author Linda Ladd for their contribution in getting it published.

Early Alcoholics Anonymous claimed a 75% success rate among "seemingly-hopeless," "medically-incurable" alcoholics who thoroughly followed the original Akron A.A. "Christian fellowship" program Bill W. and Dr. Bob developed beginning in the summer of 1935. That very simple program was founded on basic ideas from the Bible. This book takes you through the Bible on the principal points AAs studied.

A real instruction book for believers on A.A. history, Bible roots, and Bible study
By John Albert Hill Jr.
A while ago I wrote a brief review of this book. Then I spotted a review which talked about "tolerance" but never even seemed to mention this book or its contents. But time marches on. Since my first review, there has been an intense new interest in A.A.'s Biblical roots and history. Here are a few of the things that have risen on the scene: (1) Regular heritage seminars each year by Dick B. at the Wilson House where Bill Wilson was born and where he went to Sunday School and then nearby lived with his grandfather Griffith. (2) Several nationwide A.A. history conferences sprang up where the real roots were presented by Dick B., by Dr. Bob's son Smitty, by Ray G.--archivist at Dr. Bob's Home, and by several veteran A.A. women who had not been called on before. (3) Dick was asked to speak at Archives 2000, the event at the International Convention in Minneapolis. His topic--the roots of A.A. (4) Several websites, including four of Dick's own, began posting all kinds of important truths about the real early A.A. and pulling no punches when it came to accurate reporting. Some included NICD, aabibliography, anonymousone.com, mental health matters, silkworth.net, Bible Study Notes, and others. (5) More excellent studies by people like Mel B., Hartigan, Tom White, Susan Cheever, Nan Robertson, Raphael, and the biographers of Silkworth and Lois Wilson. (6) The actual Bill Wilson autobiography that had gathered dust for years was covered in Dick B.'s Turning Point and then published in full by Hazelden. There have been lots more appearances of history. But all these gave rise to the need for a guidebook that would tell people where to start as they picked up their Bibles and wanted their studies to bear the same kind of fruit the early AAs plucked from this "absolutely essential" source. Dick has written other titles on this subject since, but this book stands as a one-stop start on A.A. history and the Bible AAs read and you can read--as I have.

A specific Bible Study Guide from early AA for Today's AAs
By John Hill IV
I've long awaited this book. 9 months to be exact. It was to have been a manual for studying the Bible within A.A. and other 12 Step programs. It was delayed because of the author's surgery. At the end, it became a review of what early AAs said about Bible study, about what they studied in the Bible, about what the Bible itself is, about the Bible's statements as to our Creator and His name Yahweh and His son Jesus Christ, and then about what it has to offer in terms of releases we all need--from fear, guilt, shame, failure, despair, loneliness, and so on. The appendices are specific, scholarly studies of God's name Yahweh, of the parts of the Bible Dr. Bob considered essential, and about success in A.A. yesterday compared to today. Very useful!

Good Book - Only if it is read
By Rodney P. Dempsey
I bought this for my Brother in Law. The last time I spoke with him, he had not even taken it out of the box. What I read of it, I really enjoyed. I
read my Bible very frequently and also have the greatest respect for the "Big Book" and the writings of "Bill W." although I don't have a drinking problem, the 12 Step Program can be applied to any addiction, including worry, which affects me. This book deals with comparisons in Scripture that The A.A. Big Book uses, along with Bible verses and examples to bring the Bible and the Big Book closer together.
I also gave my 84 year old Brother in Law, who gets up about 10 a.m. starts drinking. Gets drunk. Goes back to bed and sleeps until 3 p.m. eats dinner, gets drunk again, goes back to sleep again, and repeats the process, day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year. He has a sitter who feeds and baths him. I am convinced he is doing this as a slow suicide mission, and has no intention of ever quitting. Pray for his salvation.

If you like be-bop, funky modern writing - this book is ...
By William
If you like be-bop, funky modern writing - this book is not for you. If, however, you respond to elegant, educated and grammatically inoffensive writing, where the subject-matter is not an opportunity for the author to emote, you will love this book. This is the first book I have read by RH Benson and I have now ordered quite a few other books. His writing is exquisite, but the pace of the story is its strength - I could not put the book down.

This is an historical novel, and relates events that occurred during the Elizabethan era, when the Reformation took hold. The fictional story manages to convey to the reader the harsh realities of that era and the religious conflicts that prevailed. The author, however, addresses the different religious views with a deep understanding and tolerance of the philosophical foundations of the relevant religions.

The historical accuracy is unquestionable - quite a relief when faced with the plethora of propaganda supportive of the Tudor regime. In this regard, I must digress to comment upon the benefits that the modern reader enjoys by the internet. Prior to such providers as Amazon, authors such as RH Benson, and histories that differed from those that supported the vested interests of the powerful, would simply not have been published, or would have been difficult to obtain. The ability to obtain books such as this, at a cheap price and without difficulty, means that information is disseminated throughout the world that has been previously passed down through word-of-mouth, or has been silent.

I encourage any readers who are enthusiastic about the historical accuracy of the story, to verify, by independent research, features and descriptions of characters and events in the story.

This book is a good story, well-written, and with layers which are there if you choose to explore them. I would venture to say that it is not a book for Dan Brown fans. However, if you respond to the Edwardian style of writing, and like your historical portrayals to be historically correct, then you will like this book.

How little the world has changed
By L. Rogge
This is an intriguing book. It begins rather slowly but moves along quite nicely once one is accustomed to the pace. The characters are rather clearly cut, including both virtues and vices. Although written over a hundred years ago at the time of the Elizabethan persecution of "papists", it rings true even today where it is considered "with it" to denounce the Catholic Church. A good read.

Good, at times lurid, but not comprehensive
By Steven F. Olivo
The editors of this book have put together a list of 100 undoubtedly evil people (mostly men, but including poisoner Catherine de Medici and real-life vampiress Elizabeth Bathory as well as one or two other women)distilled down to 2-3-page summaries covering their lives, their actions, and usually a little bit about their motivations, though frequently these are facile one-sentence comments such as "infidels cannot be allowed to live." Most notable are the frequently lurid descriptions of the actions of these people, some of which, such as the uncensored reprinting of mocking (and graphic)letters murderer Albert Fish wrote to the parents of two children he had killed, cooked, and eaten, are not for the easily sickened. Though body count and continuing influence are important factors, the editors also use a somewhat nebulous "glee factor" and the depravity of a subject's action when determining rank.
The usual suspects among this world's tyrants and democides top the list (Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, and so on, as well as terrorist bin Laden and a group listing for the tyrannical Taliban), but after about 30 it quickly shifts to a list of mass murderers, including the well-known (Dahmer, Bundy, Manson, Gacy, Berkowitz), the not-as-well-known (satanist Richard Ramirez, white-hater Mark Essex), and the unknown (The Boston Strangler, Jack the Ripper). Places on the list also go to Columbine shooters Harris and Klebold and a general listing for computer virus writers.
Some villains of the medieval period rank surprisingly highly, Genghis Khan, Attila, and Ivan the Terrible all appear among the top 10. Though Khan, who conquered most of Asia in a very brutal manner, probably deserves to be there, and perhaps Ivan, who set a pattern for repressive government in Russia also does, but Attila, brutal as he was, was largely unrealized possibility, for after his defeat at Chalons the odds of his dominating Europe vanished if ever they were there, and I question the high ranking of such an ephemeral person. Likewise highly rated is Basil the Bulgar-slayer, who blinded 14,000 captured prisoners, but was no more a tyrant than most to sit on the throne in Constantinople. One crime, it appears, can sometimes vault one very high on the list, though it may not have tremendous influence. Enver Pasha and Talat Pasha, who engineered the genocide of the Armenians in the Turkish Empire, share a high spot on the list, certainly merited, although none of the sultans appear.
That leads to the question of whether the editors of this book cast their nets wide enough, and turned too quickly to lurid and perhaps topical 20th century murderers to fill out the list. Though no one can deny what the Columbine shooters did was both insane and evil, they were essentially bullied kids who hit back much too hard. No one can also deny that virus writers cause many problems, but almost never death. Yet both are mentioned. Castro, however, is not, nor are Nicolae Ceacescu, Enver Hoxha, nor almost any of the other Cold War dictators, many of whom were even worse to their own people than any Communist ruler save Hitler and Mao. Chile's Pinochet makes the list, but not his counterpart in Argentina Juan Peron, of the days of helicopters departing full over the seas and returning empty and other "disappearances." Saddam Hussein makes the list, but not his opponent Ayatollah Khomeini, who sent Iranian teenagers in human-wave attacks against Iraqi tanks and bombers. Mithridates of Pontus, who murdered 100,000 Romans, and Francisco Lopez, who led the nation of Paraguay into a triple-front war in the 1800s that reduced his own population from 1,400,000 to 229,000 and killed 1,000,000 Argentinians, Brazilians, and Uruguayans, all in the name of megalomania, get no mention at all. Likewise, terrorists Yasser Arafat, Jomo Kenyatta, who led the vicious Mau Mau movement in Kenya, and Roger Casement, father of the IRA, get no mention at all.
In sum, although the book paints a very good picture of 100 evil people, it is by no means complete or comprehensive.

The banality of writing a cheap book about evil
By pnotley@hotmail.com
There are many things wrong with this book as a list, and as a discussion of the problem of evil. But consider just one thing. This is a collection of malefactors that Islamic fanatics would approve of. Of course Osama Bin Laden makes number 8, and so do the Taliban and Saddam Hussein. But that's to be expected from Americans. But how could they not admire a book in which 46 of the world's most evil people come from the United States? When you add people from Britain, Australia and Canada you get a solid majority from the Anglo-American world. And so many of their crimes involve sexual perversity and anonymous murder, which clearly trumps religious bigotry and systematic injustice in the author's scale of evils. Basically this is a book that starts off with the most infamous tyrants (Hitler is number one), and after the first twenty and thirty places, goes on to discuss mass murderers and serial killers. The four Presidential assassins are included, and the book rounds out with the Marquis De Sade and virus writers. Aside from inadvertently giving aid to comfort to America's enemies by suggesting it has, if not a monopoly of evil, controlling interest in it, the book is superficial and unpleasant to read. The book combines a shallow moralism with a lurid interest in their subject's atrocities, a sort of pornography for Republicans. The moral questions are not really addressed. For a start many of the book's subjects are patently insane, even by the strict and pro-Prosecutor guidelines of Anglo-American law. Is it useful to describe as evil someone who does not have the capacity for moral choice, or which is constrained by severe psychological problems? Sure, says the author. It doesn't matter that Martin Bryant, the Tasmanian mass murderer had an IQ of 66 or that Caligula may have been suffering from schizophrenia or epilepsy.
Reading the earlier entries one wondered how many of the charges against Genghis Khan, Attila the Hun, Ivan IV (the Terrible) or Vlad III (the Impaler, who makes the top 10) are actually true or are just propaganda. Good question, since Vlad III's status rests more on the idea that he was the inspiration for Dracula. The suspicion increases when the entry on Hussein starts by blaming him for the anthrax mailings in the fall of 2001, something which he clearly was not responsible for. The historical analysis is not very deep. Salvador Allende was not a Communist. There is no good reason for having Eichmann appear before Himmler, his superior, nor did he have to face 15 charges at Nuremberg. The book overstates the severity and intensity of the persecution of Christians as a result of Nero, while at the time ignoring his destruction of Jerusalem. Likewise Tojo's treatment of American POWs gets more condemnation than the way the treated the rest of Asia. Mussolini's worst acts, his African atrocities, get little space. And there is much that is missing. Neither Khomenei or the Shah appear; the African slave trade is completely ignored, and so is apartheid. Idi Amin Dada appears, but the perpetrators of the Rwandan genocide are missed. The Belgian Rulers who may have caused the deaths of 15 million Congolese in their occupation of the country are forgotten. The whole bloody subjugation of the Western hemisphere goes unmentioned, so there is nothing on how Pizarro managed to destroy and enslave an entire civilization out of sheer greed. The Thirty Years War, the Crusades, the conquest of Ireland, the suppression of the Dutch Revolt are all ignored. If Stalin's and Mao's famines are to be condemned what about the Irish potato famine or the (several) Bengal famines? Mobuto, Suharto, D'Aubisson, Stroessener and the rulers of Guatemala get no mention. Nor, needless to say, do Hiroshima and Nagasaki. If Garfield's assasin deserves an entry, shouldn't Gandhi's? (Or for that matter the assassins of Indira or Rajiv Gandhi?) Charles Guiteau was just a disgruntled office seeker and Garfield a mediocre politician. The assassins of Gandhi, Luxembourg, Jaures, Rabin, King, Barthou, Bloch, Milk and Moscone were fascists or something close to it. And what about the judicial murder of Thomas More or Margaret Pole? McKinley's conquest of the Philippines involved many atrocities and the death of one in seven Filipinos. Shouldn't he rank higher than his killer?

biased
By Jefferson Davis
After reading the first half-dozen entries and skimming the rest, the summaries are not as concise as they could be and some entries are questionable. The most obvious one:

John Wilkes Booth makes the list of most evil (number 94), but Linconln should be there instead. Lincoln is primarily responsible for the deaths of 620,000 people because he could have simply allowed the Confederate states to have their independence. Instead, he launched a military invasion, allowed the demolition of cities which caused starvation and disease. He imprisoned thousands of people simply because they were sympathetic to the Confederacy, leaving them jailed indefinitely, without access to attorneys or a listing of charges against them. He shut down many newspapers and confisticated telegraph companies. He refused to meet with Confederate delegations during the war, which could have resulted in a compromise. The South was justified in seeking relief from the unfair tax burden and their decreasing representation in the senate and house. The constitution and other laws effectively permitted secession. Lincoln was not really anti-slavery and slavery was dying out throughout the Americas anyway (it ended in Brazil, in 1888).

Also, referring to the Civil War battle of Antietam, 22,000 was not the number killed. It was the number of casualties (dead, wounded and missing).

Heterosexual love as SM
By Michael
Though published in 1992 it is notable that this enterprising piece of radical feminist academic propaganda has not received an Amazon review. The main message is the central dogma of the Andrea Dworkin/Catharine MacKinnon oeuvre of academic radical feminism: that heterosexual relations between males and females constitute a form of political enslavement of females by males. While Dworkin and MacKinnon attack heterosexual relations as politically evil, Masse describes such relations as a form of sadomasochism, in which the female enslaves herself to the male. She has apparently noted that there are many females who willingly ("willingly") involve themselves in sexual relations with heterosexual males. How account for this radical feminist perversion? Masse answers this question by saying that such women are masochists seeking punishment by sexual sadists (aka "heterosexual males"). The interesting thing about this account is that it makes explicit what is only implicit in most radical feminist accounts of heterosexuality: it seeks to explain why and how human females would involve themselves in something otherwise so horrifyingly objectionable as sexual relations with human males. The reason is that they are sexual masochists who enjoy ("enjoy") being sexually penetrated by male phalloi. As an overt radical feminist attack on human heterosexual relationships it is exemplary in foregrounding the disguised or rhetorically indirect radical feminist accounts of the otherwise unexplainable fact of the existence of heterosexual male/female sexual relationships. The explanation is that the "heterosexual" female is heterosexual because she likes to suffer. Now we know.

The Luck Factor: The Scientific Study of the Lucky Mind, by Richard Wiseman

Why do some people lead happy, successful lives whilst others face repeated failure and sadness? Why do some find their perfect partners whilst others stagger from one broken relationship to the next? What enables some people to have successful careers whilst others find themselves trapped in jobs they detest? And can unlucky people do anything to improve their luck―and lives?

Ten years ago, Professor Richard Wiseman decided to search for the elusive luck factor by investigating the actual beliefs and experiences of lucky and unlucky people. The results reveal a radical new way of looking at luck.

In this book Wiseman identifies the four simple behavioural techniques that have been scientifically proven to help you attract good fortune. He then shows how you can use these methods to revolutionise every area of your life―including your relationships, personal finances and career.

From Publishers Weekly
Filled with real-life stories from hundreds of interviews; inspirational quotes from the likes of Benjamin Franklin and Oprah Winfrey; and graphed research data from his eight-year study of luck, Wiseman's book promises to offer "a scientifically proven way to understand, control, and increase your luck." While many believe luck is a mystical force influenced by superstitious rituals, Wiseman, psychology chair at the University of Herfordshire in England, claims lucky people simply possess four basic psychological traits unlucky people don't: the ability to maximize chance opportunities, to listen to "gut feelings," to expect good fortune and to see the bright side of bad luck. Questionnaires and exercises offer guidance on how to acquire or enhance luckiness while keeping a "luck journal" and incorporating techniques to increase intuition, stop negative self-fulfilling prophecies and learn how to effectively network. The format is marked by redundant chapter summaries, but Wiseman's upbeat, charismatic tone might persuade even skeptical readers of the transformative effect luck can have in their personal and professional lives.

Review
"Wiseman knows the secret of a lucky life." Daily Telegraph

From the Inside Flap
A revolutionary study of luck and its power to transform our lives.

Have you ever wondered why some people seem to have all the luck, and others seem to be born unlucky? Any why do some people get to lead fulfilling lives, while others face endless failure and sadness? Is it just a matter of fate, or can unlucky people improve their luck and their lives?

Ten years ago, Dr. Richard Wiseman decided to search for the elusive luck factor by charting the actual beliefs and experiences of lucky and unlucky people. From the results, he identified four main factors that explained luck. He was then able to show a group of people, who considered themselves unlucky, how to think and behave like lucky people. The results were astounding, with almost all participants reporting significant life changes -- including increased levels of self-esteem, physical well-being, confidence and success.

The principles Dr. Wiseman reveals in this ground-breaking study can teach you how to change your luck, and literally change your life.

It really does work!
By ReadsALot
All I can say is that we got this book, and things actually DID strart going better, including getting a better job, having more positive things happen, etc. Things literally turned around. And that was within one month. I liked the exercises - very practical and doable.

In regard to the idea that he didn't have any objective test for luck - Dr. W. had subjects go into rather lengthy descriptions of what in their lives had happened to support their perception of themselves as lucky or unlucky. By most people's standards, the unlucky people WERE having rather hard times. The lucky people were having a much easier time.

It's important to remember that Dr. W. is sort of professional skeptic - he's not into the paranormal. He got these principles out of hard-headed investigation. I learned in the lab - don't argue with the results you have gotten! He's gotten good results - try it for yourself and see!

Interesting Perspective!!
By Otto Yuen
This is definitely an interesting book. It views the 'luck' from a scientific perspective. By having 4 simple principles, everyone can increase the chance of luck. In fact, Dr. Wiseman demonstrates the people with luck having a common set of personalities that lead them to have more opportunities than others. Luck is not from your psychic power, it's more the consequence of how you behave and how you view your daily life.
This book is similar to the "Millionaire Mind" by Dr. Thomas Stanley, which depicts the characteristic of being a millionaire. To be a better luck person, it's simple, just be more positive and using Dr. Wiseman's four principles.

Fortune's foursome
By Peter Uys
This 10-year study with volunteers reveals that good fortune is not primarily due to talent, hard work or intelligence. The scientific investigation is based upon interviews and experiments with people who consider themselves lucky; the author concludes that luck is a state of mind that may be cultivated.

Wiseman identifies four principles that underlie a life of good fortune, adherence to which will draw good luck into the life of the individual. These are 1. The belief that you are lucky (lucky people create, notice and act upon chance opportunities. They also have a relaxed attitude to life). 2. Lucky people make success happen by using their intuition and gut feelings. 3. One must expect good fortune, hold fast to this belief and persevere in attempting to achieve your goals. 4. Lucky people have a knack for transforming back luck into good luck. One must affirm your good fortune and have a strong conviction that everything will work out for the best.

The text is illustrated by graphs illustrating the research results plus some black and white illustrations of playing cards. Overall the conclusions are quite impressive and I find the results of the study very convincing. There are plenty of exercises and the book concludes with notes that include bibliographic references. It is heartening to finally see scientific proof of the claims made by sages and esotericists down the ages

A romantic journey worth reading; characters that stay with you
By Cindy Keen Reynders
America's western frontier in the late 1800s was definitely no place for a lady, especially one raised in a strict convent. Christina Goodwin soon discovers this. She has suffered greatly at the hands of her step father, who wants to force her to marry him, therby stealing her family's ranch. When her brother is killed by a ruthless outlaw, she is left to defend herself.

Though a stroke of fate, she is spared from being savaged by the outlaw. The handsome gunslinger who saves her, Jake Gallagher, frightens her, as well as intrigues her. As they escape the outlaw and his gang, Jake, who is on an undercover mission for the Texas Rangers, is shot.

Christina doctors him as best she can and he survives, but he has lost his memory. Working together, Jake and Christina manage to find their way to Jake's ranch. Along the way, the two are drawn to one another for comfort, as well as an abiding attraction. Jake denies his feelings for her because he doesn't remember exactly who he is and what he can offer a woman of her standing. Christina, still fearing her step father's wrath, has stretched the truth in order to obtain Jake's protection. She knows she is falling for Jake, but worries what he will think when he discovers the truth.

Despite the predicaments they encounter, Jake and Christina discover they love each other, but are afraid to admit their feelings. Jake realizes he wants to keep Christina in his life no matter the cost. Christina realizes no other man will ever take the place Jake has in her heart.

Elysa Hendricks keeps the pace of this story moving quickly and provides great detail. She weaves a rich plot that draws the reader in and keeps them turning pages to find out what happens next. Characters are well drawn, believable and lovable. I highly recommend this romance, especially for readers who want to fall in love all over again, right along with Christina and Jake.

Review for This Heart for hire by Elysa Hendricks
By Desere Steenberg
This was the second book by this fabulous author that I read and I was just as the first time blow away! The book had it all stunning characters in a beautiful rich land described by the author so perfectly that it felt as if I was actually living it !

The story of Jake and Christina is one of passion and good old fashioned western action ! I especially loved how the author did not leave anything for me to wonder about, she included every little bit of detail one needs to form the scenes in your head. I adored the fact that the author made sure to not "sugar coat" the facts she lays it all out there and that for me is what made the book such a brilliant read. I would recommend this one to anyone out there even if your not a fan of romance or westerns for that matter ,yes even you men out there would not be able to put this one down !

My Kind of Hero
By OnTheMark
If you like historical western romances, you'll love This Heart for Hire, by Elysa Hendricks. At $3.99 this more than 100,000 word story is great value for money. Elysa takes us, and her hero and heroine, on a harrowing odyssey across Texas and New Mexico. Her descriptions of the landscape are rich, and you can imagine yourself travelling with them. The journey is fraught with dangers, both physical and emotional as Jake tries to come to terms with his past--the memory of which has been stolen from him by the after effects of a head wound. After her strict religious upbringing in a convent, Christina too struggles to cope with the hardships and new fears and emotions she experiences. Her journey is one to self discovery and acceptance.
The author doesn't shy away from the harsh realities that people faced in the time she is writing about. Murder, violation, family betrayal, hunger, thirst, brutality, torture, and greed all conspire to separate our hero and heroine. It's a plot with many twists and turns. I'm not usually a fan of westerns, but I recommend this one. Jake is my kind of hero!

Our Iceberg Is Melting, by John Kotter, Holger Rathgeber

Most of the denizens of the Antarctic penguin colony sneer at Fred, the quiet but observant scout who detects worrying signs that their home, an iceberg, is melting.  Fred must cleverly convince and enlist key players, such as Louis, the head penguin; Alice, the number two bird; the intractable NoNo the weather expert; and a passle of school-age penguins if he is to save the colony.

Their delightfully told journey illuminates in an unforgettable way how to manage the necessary change that surrounds us all. Simple explanatory material following the fable enhances the lasting value of these lessons. Our Iceberg Is Melting is at once charming, accessible and profound; a treat for virtually any reader.

From Publishers Weekly
Harvard Business School professor Kotter, author of the bestselling Leading Change (1996), teams up with executive Rathgeber to offer his contribution to the "business fable" genre. Kotter presents his framework for an effective corporate change initiative through the tale of a colony of Antarctic penguins facing danger-inspired, perhaps, by today's real-life global warming crisis (or, perhaps, by March of the Penguins' box office). Under the leadership of one particularly astute bird, a small team of penguins with varied personalities and leadership skills implement a thoughtful plan for coaxing the other birds in their colony through a time of necessary but wrenching change. The logic of Kotter's fictional framework is wobbly at times-his characters live and act very much like real penguins except that one carries a briefcase and another ("the Professor") cites articles from scholarly journals-and the whimsical tone will not be to everyone's taste. However, this light, quick read should fulfill its intended purpose: to serve as a springboard for group discussions about corporate culture, group dynamics and the challenges of change.

Review

“Penguins illustrate how to conquer change

At first glance, Our Iceberg Is Melting seems easy to dismiss as an attempt to fuse a few hot topics - global warming, marching penguins - into a Who Moved My Cheese? fable-as-business-lesson best seller.

But this penguin parable has a pedigree in the form of Harvard Business School's John Kotter, author of Leading Change, the 1996 business guide that also sported our flat-footed, feathered friends on the cover. The Heart of Change was his 2002 follow-up.

This time out, Kotter moves the penguins inside, using how a colony of them copes with a potential catastrophe - yes, their iceberg is melting - to illustrate his eight-step process of successful change.

Their story is short and peppered with the personalities organizations inevitably include: the naysayers and nitpickers, the innovators and agitators, the leaders and followers. The idea is that everyone in a group must play a role in navigating change.

In that vein, Kotter and co-author Holger Rathgeber write that their goal is to use a good story with visual stimuli (full-color, cartoon-like illustrations) to influence a broad range of people to better handle change and produce results. In other words, companies should buy a copy for everyone from the CEO to the stock clerk.

This approach paid off for Spencer Johnson of Who Moved My Cheese?, who writes the foreword.

Kotter's process advocates quick action to confront issues, group thinking and the buy-in of the whole organization. The goal: replace old habits with new behaviors and make them stick.

Whether you're a fan of lowest-common-denominator reading or not, there's no denying the logic behind Kotter's steps and the at-times clever way they are woven into the penguins' journey.” ―Michelle Archer, USA TODAY

Oh, no a melting iceberg!
By Lynda L. Blevins
I was attracted to this book because...
I’m researching leading with a sense of urgency and I have been reading a lot of John Kotter. I was intrigued by the fable concept.

This book was about
One penguin releases the iceberg they are living on is melting. This is the story of how he gets others involved to discover what they should do as a group to avoid disaster.

Things I liked about this book
As a fable, it tells a great story of these penguins, coming together and finding a way to reasonably work and find a solution to their community’s impending problem.

Why you should read this book
This book is a great encouragement that if we listen to each other and find ways to work together, we can solve many problems in community.

This book lived up to the back cover copy
The fable is a great illustration of how problems can be identified, tackled and solved by working together.
If you enjoyed Who Moved My Cheese? you will enjoy this story, too.

The "Penguin Book" Knows All...
By Jeremy Hawk
Change Management 101. Of all the principles, models, and frameworks I've learned through my recently completed MBA program, the Kotter model for change management will undoubtedly stick with me the most. And I really believe that this book is the reason for that resonance.

Written in a style that everyone can understand, even possibly my 3 year old daughter, this short, illustrated book, offers a crash course in effective change management. I couldn't help but look at my organization in a different light after walking through the 8 steps explained in the book. Ever since, I can asses any new situation where change is in question by asking how it applies to the "penguin book." If you haven't read this and are involved in any organization that could benefit from any type of change, I highly recommend you give it a read.

Excellent book for facing change
By Dr R Srinivsa Murthy
Excellent book for facing change:
I work as a psychiatrist with persons with intellectual developmental disorder(IDD) (earlier called mental handicap) and their families. The chief challenge of my work is to bring a positive approach to training efforts by the parents. As parents with a ‘special child’ parents face many challenges in bringing up and in planning for the child’s future. This responsibility is not what parents wanted, when the child was born into their family. The needs of ‘special child’ requires parents to think completely differently about a number of areas like day to day care, training the child, schooling, health care, planning for the future etc. It is these challenges that require you to take up the challenges and find new ways of succeed.
The central theme of my work, is to EMPOWER YOUR CHILD AND YOUR FAMILY TO FACE THE CHALLENGES.
It is in this context, that the book ‘Our iceberg is melting’ has a special meaning to you and your family.
Most parents pass through life denying the ‘special’ needs of your child. From the book, parents learn to accept the situation, by accepting your child’s ‘special’ needs that they can be of greatest help to him/her.
The book introduces the 8 principles of problem solving, which is useful to parents in a slightly modified form, as below.
1. Recognise the special needs of your child and importance of training
2. Pull together all members of your family
3. Develop a vision for your child and a Strategy
4. Reach out professionals for help and support
5. Acquire skills to train your child
6. Plan for Short-term gains
7. Don't give up
8. Make effort continuous and regular.
