Juju Sundin, a practising physiotherapist for 35 years, conducts labour pain management programs for pregnant women. She is a regular contributor to a range of parenting and women's magazines and has been Chairperson of the Australian Physiotherapy Association's Women's Health Group. She lives in Sydney. Sarah Murdoch has enjoyed a successful global modelling and acting career; she is Juju's best known client and a devotee of her methods. Sarah serves as the Patron on the Australian National Breast Cancer Foundation.

If you are considering going unmedicated, this book is a must read!!!

This book is a must read, if you are thinking about an unmedicated birth. I was tempted by the idea of going unmedicated, but decided to leave my options open until I actually knew what labor was like. My doula asked me to read this book and I skimmed the whole thing thinking that some of it was not for me at all (most of the stuff of vocalizing just sounded crazy). As I got closer to my due date I got more and more convinced that I wanted to try going unmedicated but unfortunately my baby was late and I had to be induced. I knew that inductions are often much worse than natural labor because everything happens more quickly and labor is more intense, so I had resigned myself to the idea of getting an epidural. When the big day came, I was induced at 8:30AM in the morning and quickly had regular contractions that were not painful at all. At 10:30AM my doctor broke my water and the next contraction was already completely overwhelming. I started stumping until my doula got there. We tried several different things, like a birthing ball, sitting in a rocking chair etc. but my babies heart rate would go down whenever I sat down. So I finally just stood at the foot of my bed with my husband behind me and stomped and eventually grunted my way through labor until 12:30PM. Vocalizing came absolutely natural to me, despite the fact that I had thought it was the most ridiculous thing I had ever heard of. It just felt right to make those funny noises somehow and really relieved some of the panic I felt with my contractions just 90 seconds apart. By 12:30 PM I was so overwhelmed, however, that I was ready to have an epidural. So my doula got the nurses to come in and check my progress before we called the anesthesiologist. To everyone's surprise, I was already complete at that point. I was absolutely shocked. The 2 hours after my Dr. broke my water were definitely intense, but I had no idea I had gone through transition. All I could say is "I'm not ready to have a baby yet. This is too fast." But they got me to start pushing using a birthing bar and my Dr. barely made it there in time for my daughters delivery at 1:02PM. Pushing worked really well with the coffee press image in the back of my mind and lots of vocalizing to help me out (at one point during delivery someone slammed the door to my room shut because I was so loud, but I couldn't have cared less). I can't praise the techniques this book teaches enough!!! I had the best birthing experience I could have imagined despite having to be induced. Some of it may have been sheer luck, but I am convinced the book deserves major credit.

What I love about this book is it gives you real skills ...

Buy this book! The empahsis is on making it all the way with no epidural, but it's not judgy at all about those who do plan on getting the drugs at some point in labor. What I love about this book is it gives you real skills for dealing with pain, and instructions on how to practice those skills at home. That way you can get a good labor established before the epidural, which may or may not slow labor. You never know. But I feel really empowered by the practicality of this book! Also has great tips for partners.

A really good book to feel prepared

What I loved when I read "Birth skills" is the mix between what's written by the teacher, Juju, about the content of her birth preparation classes, and the input from her former student Sarah, who applied the various techniques.

Also, for each technique (leg/arm rythmic movements, vocalization and breathing, visualization, use of stress balls...) there are a few short paragraphs from yet other students who also explain how they used a particular technique and how exactly it worked for them during their labor.
There is a lot in there for birth partners as well, how they can help concretely throughout. It's wonderful to read about the very real teamwork between some couples during the birth process!

It was very convincing to say the least - you do end up wanting to give it a try!
What I also really liked is how Juju starts by explaining she has nothing against hospitals : there is not even a hint of guilt trip if you think about going for an epidural after all; rather, the point is for women to feel empowered and in control at the best of their abilities during the birth (there is no"hardcore" rooting for natural birth at all costs).
It also tells you upfront there are going to be some repetitions because that's how you end up remembering stuff!

I hesitated between Ina May's book and this one: but the excerpt I read from Ina May's book started with different women's long stories on their natural births, and this did not appeal to me.

EDIT POST-BIRTH : I had a quick and natural labor, but gave up on many of the skills when the going got rough; I squeezed my partner's hands instead of stress balls, and what helped me most was concentrating really hard on exhaling loudly and focusing on a point (the faucet, or a painting on the wall)... as to the essential oils and music they were clean forgotten! Still, I came in confident and feeling prepared, and I am sure a lot is thanks to the book and did help!

Love this! I love momentity and the armour your children series as well. We have done a couple of days. I love doing a devotional with my kids and a weekly Gospel topic, so this book takes out all of the prep work for me. I love it!

Messages are One-Minute Messages

Honestly, I am disappointed in this book. I was expecting 5-minute messages and most of them are one minute at best. The whole week is one layout and each day has one scripture. There are a few questions at the end of each week and an idea of a talk you can look up. I like that she arranged each week as a topic but there just isn't much for each day. My kids are pretty little so there is no way we can "discuss" those short scriptures for an extra four minutes. I was hoping there would be quotes from apostles and such to round out each day. I can look up the scriptures in the topical guide and get most of what is in this book. I haven't decided if I am going to return it or if I am just going to combine multiple "days" into one devotional. I really only need them Monday through Friday during the school year. If you are looking for a book to just kind of get you started on devotionals (essentially give you topics), this one will do that. It won't give you fleshed out five-minute devotionals, though. :(

Very good book for practical application to Forex

This book is a very good analysis of fostering the trader to understand the "judgment," of how to trade successfully. If you have experience trading the Forex market, you will appreciate the author's explanations of trading to obtain a profit. The author explains the mindset you must have and maintain in order to stay profitable because the psychology of trading is very important in addition to having a trading plan and strategies for success. If you have experienced Forex trading and it's frustrations, this book puts you in a better frame of mind. The book also explains some strategies that the author has found to be successful. The information in this book is down-to-earth and practical.
