I read the comic version of this as a kid and it was much better than the book

This book takes FOREVER to get through - there is way too much backstory and way too many rabbit-trails. The movie got it right - focus on David's relationship with the gangs, specifically Nicky Cruz. Also there is inappropriate content for kids under 16. I read the comic version of this as a kid and it was much better than the book!

I read this to my 11 year old son, to help lay down a positive foundation to follow in his life. He enjoyed listening and talking about it; he would even remind me to read it at night.
