Gregory Goodell is an award-winning writer-producer-director whose credits include independent features, documentaries, television movies, and mini-series. He has lectured and taught at the American Film Institute and other organizations. Mr. Goodell lives on the West Coast with his wife and two daughters.

Lots of good info but EXTREMELY out dated

Not wanting to leave a single stone unturned in my search for all information available about independent film production I bought this book - and because it was about $2.
It does have a lot of in-depth information. But so much of it is way out dated. Considering that the original was published in 1982 (pre Tarantino, pre Rodriguez, hell, pre personal computers) and the up-date was published in 1998, almost 15 years ago, (a life time in the film industry) there is so much information you won't find in this book.
It's almost useless to write a book on independent film without including information on The Blair With Project, Paranormal Activity, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Napoleon Dynamite, Open Water, etc, that have come since 1998 and had huge successes. But this book attempts to do just that.
If you're looking for an all inclusive definitive book on the subject of independent film production then keep looking. But for $2 used this one has SOME information some of the others don't. And for that I liked it.

Perfection

This book is so clear and concise every step of the way from conception to distribution. It doesn't try to be the end all in getting yourself into independent filmmaking by offering you real advise on certain situations where you need to work with a professional ie attorney or accountant , etc. It makes it feel like he's not trying to sell you but truly give you advise from someone who has experience. This book will be by my side for a long time, it's a great reference tool and helps bring clarity when your getting yourself into something that can seem overwhelming like making your first independent film. One of the main parts I loved about this book was going over the "investment memorandum", if your going to raise the money yourself it really shows you how to professionally approach investors. Also I ordered the original 1982 publishing by accident, this gave me great insight on how certain information was obtained then and what independent films we're breaking boundaries then. I would love to compare this one with the updated 1998 publishing, but I don't regret getting the original, like I said it has given me great insight. All around Greg Goodell knows how to convey information in a way that makes it easy to understand and still gives you the little details that are needed. He also like I said offers up seeking professional assistance when no book would be able to give you the answer. If your serious about raising the money for your film and starting from scratch I couldn't recommend a better book.

The Theory of Film Production

In theory, this should be a fascinating reading experience.
The three essentials of film production-concept, the actual production and distribution, have done more to advance the cause of Indie filmmakers being driven to distraction, not to mention the poorhouse!
The area of budgeting is murky with contradictions in Goodell's tome.
On the one hand, he tells us that the "Above the Line" (producer, director, story rights, screenwriter and principal cast) and "Below the Line" (all other actual production expenses) ratio is often 1:3 but is quite often reversed.
Thanks for the clarity! The book is little more than an extended Wikipedia entry. It contains all the facts but lacks any real sense of the richness and complexity of film production.
It relies too much on pre-Internet publications and information previously provided elsewhere and has a disturbing habit of leaving potential filmmakers with a bald fact without offering a glimpse into the strange world behind the facts.
