You don't have to be a gym rat to appreciate what certified personal trainer and Men's Health cover model Avedon has to say in this sensible, easily customizable approach to nutrition and fitness. Unsurprisingly, Avedon's technique boils down to eating a series of small meals throughout the day, emphasizing lean meats, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables. Some recipes, most notably protein shakes, call for protein powder and/or other nutrients requiring a special trip to the health food store, but most other ingredients are easily sourced. The most jarring adjustment for those following Avedon's program will likely be the absence of salt and refined white sugar in virtually all of his 150-plus recipes: sweet dishes like Raspberry Mocha Chocolate Chip Cookies and Peach Cobbler use stevia or a similar sugar substitute. Once readers get past that hurdle they'll find plenty of easy-to-prepare recipes that taste as good as they sound. Avedon has thoughtfully weighted the book in favor of familiar classics like deviled eggs, chili, meatloaf, lasagna and key lime pie, as well as familiar health-food staples like baked squash and steamed fish.

Solid info inside typical Men's Health write-up

This is a decent book. It's written like a Men's Health mag, so if you don't like that "voice" then you won't enjoy this book at all. It's a bit silly but supposed to be inspiring, motivational, casual guy talk. Whatever.

Some reviews have complained about similicity of recipes. Or that recipes when followed have no flavor. Or that they turn out bad when followed exactly. Well, let me address these points.

1) Simple recipes are a positive thing for a busy man who is trying to balance a fast paced, demanding career with an active social life and a tough workout regimen. The more easy ways we can get full nutrition with high protein content the better. Less items to shop for, less time spent preparing food items, less time consuming them.

2) For somebody who is focused on body building or athletic performance, food is fuel. It isn't a social occasion. It isn't something where you sit down and enjoy all the flavors and aromas. It's like putting gas in your car. Pick the quality grade you want, pump it in, and get back on the road.

3) If you follow a recipe and it turns out bad, you probably did something wrong. If you follow recipes to the letter, you're definitely doing something wrong (unless you're baking). Recipes are guidelines. What is a "medium" tomato? Or a "large" egg? Or even "medium" heat? Food products vary widely by location, consumer-grade ovens can vary by as much as 25 degrees, stovetops vary in heat output.. you don't like cumin? Well then don't put so much in the chili. Enough said.

Now I do agree, the organization of this book is somewhat poor. It seems good at first, but after you first look at it and then start using it, you wish things were in different places. Well ya know what I did? I used a razor and cut the pages out. Used a 3-hole punch and re-organized them into a binder. Now the pages are where I want them, with dividers and markers so I can find everything quickly. It's not a holy Bible, you can suit it to fit your needs, remove the junk you don't want. I also added pages from other similar books that I like and compliment this material.

Also, this isn't a diet book per se, it's a nutrition book more than anything. If you're looking to loose weight by changing your diet, just eating the foods in the book won't be as beneficial as something tailored towards weight loss. These foods are to be paired with a strenuous exercise routine to build muscle in the serious athlete.

And finally, everybody is different. While it's tempting to have a play-by-play which tells you exactly what to eat, when to eat it, what supps to take, etc.. that doesn't mean it's going to work for you. You need to work at it, take notes, and change things one thing at a time to see what effects it has, and over time you find the right combination for you. Yea it's good to have a starting point, but unless you're built like Greg Avendon (if you're reading this you probably aren't!), then you most likely won't benefit from his nutritional profile. Take the concepts he lays out and then do the hard work to make it applicable to you.

Absolutely Amazing

I bought this book to teach me how to cook. Being a single guy in my mid-twenties my cooking skills were dismal at best. I figured if I was going to learn I might as well learn right and do it as healthy as I could. I'm very glad I picked this up.

This book will teach you how to get the most benefit out of every meal and how to space your meals to keep your metabolism's fire roaring all day long. Best thing about this book is all the meals are delicious AND easy. It is not just recipes, its an education (why we eat certain things and why we don't eat others etc etc.)

I was a lean guy even before i even started using recipes out of this book. I was working out 4 to 5 times a week so looking at me you wouldn't think I was carrying much (if any) excess body fat. After just a few short weeks I could feel a huge difference in how I felt. I felt clean. After my first 8 week cycle (1 week relaxed phase, 5 weeks lean phase, 2 weeks ripped phase) I could notice a huge difference in my physique (muscle definition was vastly improved). Best thing was, it wasn't just me. Family, friends, co-workers all commented on how good I looked, how much leaner I looked.

I LOST 7 pounds of fat I didn't even know I had!! I ate more but lost weight and still gained strength.

This book is geared more towards those with active lifestyles but I would definitely recommend this to EVERYBODY. Anyone who wants to learn how to eat right and make a habit of it will benefit from this book.

great cook book for a guy

I love this book because it is written by a man and, I believe, intended to be used by a man. I have some other cook books that have all these super complicated recipes that take forever to make and use like 15 different ingredients. Sure those recipes taste good, but who has the time or the willpower to cook them. Not me. This book is great because all of the recipes are pretty easy to cook, most of them use the same basic ingredients, the recipes are healthy, and they taste good. If that is what you are looking for then this book will be a good buy for you.
