I am very pleased and impressed with the Robertson text. It has more information, is much more current, contains a wealth of supportive pedagogical devices, and can sustain readability more easily than our current product.
?I believe the students will respond very well to the author's writing style.
The most impressive features of the textbook are the sections which discuss the implications for caregivers as they reflect [upon] the roles and responsibilities of caregivers in relation to chapter topics. Other impressive features are the tables, charts and checklists within the textbook. These items provide excellent resources for the students to reference as they cover the material within the chapters.
The emphasis on knowledge of child development and implications for caregivers section in many of the chapters helps make the connection between theory (and knowledge) and practice (providing for the safety, health, and nutrition of children).
The writing style is both friendly and authoritative so that students feel comfortable reading the material as well as confident that the author is presenting topics accurately and without undue bias.
About the Author
Cathie Robertson received her B.S. and M.S. degrees from San Diego State University and did much of her undergraduate work at California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo. She is a professor of Child Development and Family Studies at Grossmont College near San Diego, California. She has taught child development, family studies, and food and nutrition courses, specializing in childhood nutrition, for more than 25 years and is now semiretired and teaches online. She is the former president of the International Nanny Association and serves on several committees for issues that involve early childhood education and nutrition. Ms. Robertson has made numerous national, state, and local professional presentations, including a number of presentations at NAEYC conferences. She has been the recipient of a number of grants, including one for a curriculum and resource guide for working with prenatally substance-exposed children and their families and another to create an intergenerational program where senior volunteers were trained to work with preschool children. She volunteers regularly in early elementary classes to keep current and is involved in a school garden project that helps children learn about nutrition education.

many passages of the text could have been better worded as well as shortened

I'm currently using this book in one of my early childhood education classes and never before have I had a textbook so difficult to read. My classmates as well as my teacher happen to agree with my sentiments.
It's excessively long, we've already found some spelling errors, many passages of the text could have been better worded as well as shortened, the text practically repeats what was just said two sentences previously- just reworded, and also it's really really boring.
Apparently the 5th edition is way better than this one so I highly recommend everyone to obtain that one instead.
